The Southern Suburbs run from the edge of the City Bowl out to Constantia's wine farms and down to Tokai Forest, under the eastern slopes of Table Mountain. Gardens are established and well treed. Away from Noordhoek's sea air, the job here is mostly about rain and shade.

The mountain makes the Southern Suburbs wetter than most of Cape Town, and a winter front can bring weeks of soaking rain. So the drainage is built in: concealed drainage on the Claremont louvre roof, a box gutter on the Kenilworth ceiling.
The other local factor is trees. Pines and oaks drop needles, leaves and pollen onto any roof beneath them, as on our Tokai louvre roofs. Closed aluminium blades shed most of that debris and a rinse clears the rest. Under Claremont's canopy and on grey Constantia winter days, white blades and marble-white panels stop a covered patio going dim.
