Most Cape Town patios are three-season spaces at best. The south-easter spoils summer evenings and winter rain takes care of the rest. A patio enclosure changes that: a solid aluminium roof overhead, with the sides closed in where the weather comes from, so the stoep works as a room. Why an open patio only works part-time here

Cape Town weather is honest about its intentions. From spring the south-easter arrives, and we engineer every structure for it because it regularly pushes past 80 km/h. Then winter swings the other way, with fronts that put rain across the peninsula for days at a stretch. An uncovered stoep gets squeezed from both ends, and most people quietly stop using theirs somewhere around May. Ask anyone with a west-facing patio in Blouberg.

Overhead cover fixes the rain. It does nothing about wind, dust or the low winter sun off the water. For those you need sides, and that's the difference between a covered patio and an enclosed one.

What we mean by a patio enclosure

Our patio enclosures start with a solid aluminium roof, then close in the sides you need. The sides can be drop blinds, screens or glass infills fitted to the aluminium structure, and you can enclose as much or as little as makes sense: one sheltered side facing the wind, or a largely closed-in room. The whole structure is designed, fabricated and installed by one team, in marine-grade aluminium with stainless fasteners, no ferrous metal, and a lifetime corrosion guarantee on the aluminium.

The point is control. You decide what stays out, how much of the view stays in, and how open the space feels when the weather behaves.

Start with the roof

Two roofs do most of the work in our enclosures. A patio ceiling is a fixed aluminium roof, fully weatherproof, priced from R2 800 per square metre supplied and installed. It suits a patio that needs permanent, guaranteed cover and a clean finished ceiling line.

A louvre roof gives you rotating blades instead: open for sun, closed to about 95% weatherproof with integrated gutters carrying the rain away. Manual or motorised, with rain and wind sensors available so the roof shuts itself when the weather turns. These start from R3 200 per square metre. If you like the idea of open sky over the table on good days, this is the one. Either way the roof can be colour-matched to the house.

Then close in the sides

Sides are where an enclosure gets tuned to the site. No two patios face the same weather, and the mix below covers most of what we fit.

• Drop blinds. Down when the wind gets up, out of the way when it doesn't. A practical answer for a side you only need to close sometimes.
• Screens. Fixed protection that takes the edge off wind and dust while keeping air moving through the space.
• Glass infills. The premium option: full weather protection with the view untouched. Worth considering on a patio that looks at the sea or the mountain.

Will it still feel like outside?

The honest concern with enclosing a patio is ending up with a dim add-on room that's neither inside nor out. It's avoidable. Glass keeps the outlook, screens keep the airflow, and a louvre roof opens the whole ceiling to the sky when the weather allows. On a good day the result is an open patio; on a foul day it's a room.

What changes most is daily use. An enclosed patio becomes where breakfast happens in July, and where the braai carries on while the south-easter works through the neighbourhood. You stop checking the forecast before inviting people over, and that shift in habit is the real return on the project.
