The brief

A wall-attached aluminium extruded pergola installed over the poolside entertainment terrace of a modern double-storey residence in Constantia. The structure spans the full width of the home's rear façade, with fixed-roof aluminium slats running uniformly across the underside, mounted to the building on one side and supported on slender black columns at the pool edge.

The build

Matte black powder-coated aluminium throughout: extruded roof slats, frame and columns finished to the same matte black as the home's window joinery. The roof is built up from extruded aluminium sections running parallel across the bay, providing a permanent fixed cover with concealed drainage in the perimeter beams. LED strip lighting integrated into the perimeter casts a continuous warm line along the underside. Marine-grade aluminium extrusion, stainless fasteners. Frame proportions and colour chosen so the structure reads as part of the architecture rather than an addition.

The result

The fixed-slat roof gives a clean continuous architectural eave that extends the home's flat-roof profile out over the entertainment terrace. The integrated LED line is the only visible electrical feature. All wiring is concealed inside the cavity profile. Closed extruded sections shed water cleanly to the concealed perimeter gutter.

Matte black against Constantia joinery

Matching the powder coat to the home's window joinery is what makes this Constantia pergola look original to the house. Matte black picks up the frames, and because the extruded slats run uniformly across the bay, the roof reads as a continuation of the home's flat roofline rather than a bolt-on.

A fixed slat roof suited the brief better than an adjustable one here. The terrace works year-round as a poolside entertainment area, and Constantia gets serious winter rain off the mountain, so a permanent closed cover with drainage concealed in the perimeter beams keeps the paving dry without any blades to operate. The LED strip in the perimeter does the evening shift, with every cable hidden inside the profile.
