On this side of Table Mountain the patio faces the sea. West-facing terraces take the full afternoon sun, and the wind comes from two directions: the south-easter off the mountain in summer and the north-westers off the Atlantic in winter. A cover here has to keep the horizon open and stand up to salt spray straight off the water.
Every project we have documented on the Seaboard is a louvre roof. In Bakoven a motorised roof in Umber Grey spans a clifftop patio with no intermediate columns. In Camps Bay a cantilevered roof keeps posts off the view line, and in Sea Point a charcoal frame with white blades covers a patio off the house.

Salt comes first on this strip. The homes closest to the water take spray straight off the surf, and ordinary steel fittings do not last in it. Every Seaboard roof we have documented is marine-grade aluminium with no steel in the frame, held together with coastal-grade or stainless fixings. On the Bakoven roof the powder coat is rated for front-line coastal exposure, and even the fixings into the existing wall are stainless.
The south-easter is the wind to build for. In summer it funnels down off the mountains above Camps Bay and can reach Bakoven with almost no warning. A cantilever puts all the load on the fixing side, so the frame and anchors are sized for it, as on the Camps Bay roof, where no post stands between the terrace and the Atlantic.
