Louvre Awning + Pergola in Tokai

The brief

Tokai is a leafy Southern Suburbs neighbourhood bordered by the Tokai Forest, a setting that creates beautiful dappled light but also means patios are often partially shaded by mature trees. This installation combined a freestanding extruded aluminium pergola frame with a full louvre awning roof to create a fully covered outdoor structure that could be opened to the tree canopy or closed completely for weather protection.

The build

The extruded pergola frame is freestanding. It does not attach to the house wall, which was important given the patio's relationship to the existing garden layout. The louvre awning roof sits within the pergola frame, with white adjustable blades spanning the full internal width.

A freestanding pergola is chosen when wall attachment is not practical or desirable. The extruded aluminium frame is self-supporting and anchored into paving or footings without any wall fixings. When open, the blades create a filtered light effect through the tree canopy; when closed, the patio is completely sheltered from rain.

The result

The pergola now reads as a destination in the garden, a covered outdoor room that is shaded in summer, protected in winter and visually integrated with the surrounding Tokai landscape. The freestanding configuration means it can be repositioned in the future if the garden layout changes.

No wall fixings in this Tokai garden

The one thing this structure doesn't touch is the house. The garden layout ruled out wall attachment, so the extruded aluminium pergola frame stands on its own, anchored at the posts instead of tied into the building. Self-supporting frames have to brace themselves in every direction, which is what the extruded profile is there to do.

Inside that frame sits a full louvre roof, white blades running the internal width. Tokai's mature trees were the reason for going adjustable rather than fixed: open, the blades let the forest's dappled light through onto the patio; closed, they seal the space against rain coming through the canopy. And because nothing is fixed to the house, the whole pergola could be moved if the garden is ever laid out differently.
