Aluminium carports in Cape Town: what to know before you build

A carport in Cape Town has a harder life than most. Salt in the air, summer sun that cooks paintwork, and a south-easter that will find any weak fixing. Why aluminium beats steel, timber and shade net here

Drive through any Cape Town suburb and you will see the usual carport materials ageing badly: shade net gone grey and baggy, steel frames bleeding rust at the welds. The coast is hard on structures, and a carport stands in the worst of it all day. Here is how the options compare:

• Steel. Strong and cheap upfront, but salt air finds every scratch, weld and bolt hole. Repainting the frame every few years becomes part of owning it.
• Timber. Handsome on day one, then it wants sanding and sealing on repeat. Skip the maintenance and it greys, cracks and eventually rots.
• Shade net. The cheapest cover, but it is shade rather than shelter. UV fades and sags it, and it does nothing against winter rain.

Flat, pitched or louvre roof

The workhorse is a flat or gently sloped roof in IBR aluminium sheeting, the same solid cover we fit on our fixed awnings. It sheds winter rain, keeps direct sun off the car and suits most driveways. A pitched roof costs more but lifts a street-facing carport and can follow the roofline of the house.

The premium option is a louvre-roof carport, from R3 200 per square metre. Rotating aluminium blades open for light and airflow and close to around 95% weatherproof, with integrated gutters carrying the water away. It is a real step up in cost on a double, but it turns the carport into usable covered space: pull the cars out and you have a shaded spot for a braai or a work bench.

Sun, salt and your paintwork

Cape sun is unkind to cars that stand outside. Paint dulls, dashboards crack and rubber trim dries out, and near the sea there is salt fallout settling on the bodywork and holding moisture against it. A solid roof deals with all of it at once: full shade, no rain spotting, no salty mist drying on the bonnet every morning. If you have ever parked under a tree to dodge the sun, you already know the theory; a carport is the version that does not drop sap on the roof.

The same logic applies to the structure doing the protecting. It faces identical conditions to the car underneath, which is exactly why we will not put ferrous metal anywhere near a coastal install.

Do you need approval?

Sometimes, and it is worth checking before you build rather than after. The answer depends on the carport's size, where it sits on the erf, and how close it comes to the boundary and the street. Some smaller structures go up without full plans while others need a submission, and sorting out an unapproved structure later costs far more than doing the paperwork first.
