An aluminium pergola is one of the more affordable ways to put a proper engineered roof over a patio, and the pricing is simpler than most people expect. Ours start from R3 000 per square metre, supplied and installed. In this guide we work through what that means for a typical patio, what pushes the number up or down, and how it stacks up against composite pergolas and louvre roofs.

Where the number starts

Our extruded aluminium pergolas start from R3 000 per square metre, supplied and installed. One rate, covering the structure, the roof and the labour. There is no separate installation bill waiting at the end, and no kit standing on your driveway that still needs a builder.

That from-rate buys the entry configuration: a straightforward span, a standard colour and a clean fixing surface. Every project is quoted individually after a free site visit, because the things that move the number are physical and specific to your house. A pergola bolted to a double-storey wall in Constantia prices differently to a freestanding one on an exposed Langebaan plot, and a from-rate cannot know that.

What a typical patio works out at

The arithmetic is worth doing before anyone visits. A 4 x 5 m patio is 20 square metres, which puts the starting point at around R60 000. A smaller 3 x 4 m courtyard is 12 square metres, so from about R36 000. A generous 6 x 4 m entertainment area comes to 24 square metres, from roughly R72 000.

Treat those as orientation figures, not quotes. They tell you which league you are shopping in, and that is exactly what they are for. If the space is an odd shape, measure the rectangle you actually want covered; the rate applies to roof area, not paving.

What moves the price

Two pergolas with the same footprint can land on quite different numbers. These are the things we price when we walk a site:

Size and span. More area means more total cost, but long unsupported spans are the real driver: they call for heavier profiles and extra posts.
Roof choice. Fixed multiwall polycarbonate gives a fully watertight roof with soft, filtered light. Retractable shade fabric opens the whole space to the sky on good days. They carry different prices.
Colour and finish. Standard baked-enamel colours sit at the entry point; special powder-coat colours add a little.
Footings and fixing. Bolting into a sound wall is the simple case. Freestanding structures need footings, and some older walls want reinforcement before they can carry a roof.
Site access. A ground-floor stoep with side access installs quickly. A third-floor terrace where every length comes through the house takes longer, and time is money.

How it compares with composite pergolas and louvre roofs

A louvre roof starts from R3 200 per square metre, roughly R4 000 more on the same patio. For that you swap a fixed roof for rotating aluminium blades: open for sun and airflow, closed for around 95% weatherproof cover with integrated gutters, and you can add motorised operation with rain and wind sensors. If you want one space that adapts through the day, the step up is small over the life of the structure. If all you need is permanent watertight cover, the polycarbonate pergola does it for less.
