An aluminium pergola is one of the more affordable ways to put a proper engineered roof over a patio, and the pricing is simpler than most people expect. Ours start from R3 000 per square metre, supplied and installed. In this guide we work through what that means for a typical patio, what pushes the number up or down, and how it stacks up against composite pergolas and louvre roofs.
Our extruded aluminium pergolas start from R3 000 per square metre, supplied and installed. One rate, covering the structure, the roof and the labour. There is no separate installation bill waiting at the end, and no kit standing on your driveway that still needs a builder.
That from-rate buys the entry configuration: a straightforward span, a standard colour and a clean fixing surface. Every project is quoted individually after a free site visit, because the things that move the number are physical and specific to your house. A pergola bolted to a double-storey wall in Constantia prices differently to a freestanding one on an exposed Langebaan plot, and a from-rate cannot know that.
The arithmetic is worth doing before anyone visits. A 4 x 5 m patio is 20 square metres, which puts the starting point at around R60 000. A smaller 3 x 4 m courtyard is 12 square metres, so from about R36 000. A generous 6 x 4 m entertainment area comes to 24 square metres, from roughly R72 000.
Treat those as orientation figures, not quotes. They tell you which league you are shopping in, and that is exactly what they are for. If the space is an odd shape, measure the rectangle you actually want covered; the rate applies to roof area, not paving.
Two pergolas with the same footprint can land on quite different numbers. These are the things we price when we walk a site:
Of the pergola family we build, the extruded version is the entry point. Composite pergolas start from R3 500 per square metre and give you a timber look with none of the sanding, sealing or rot that real wood demands. On that 4 x 5 m patio the step up is about R10 000 at the starting rates, and it earns its keep where the structure has to sit against a deck or a farm-style home.
A louvre roof starts from R3 200 per square metre, roughly R4 000 more on the same patio. For that you swap a fixed roof for rotating aluminium blades: open for sun and airflow, closed for around 95% weatherproof cover with integrated gutters, and you can add motorised operation with rain and wind sensors. If you want one space that adapts through the day, the step up is small over the life of the structure. If all you need is permanent watertight cover, the polycarbonate pergola does it for less.
The rate is not a materials price. It includes measurement and design, engineering for wind (everything we build is specified for the Cape Doctor, which regularly tops 80 km/h), fabrication in marine-grade aluminium with stainless fasteners and no ferrous metal, installation by our own teams, and a lifetime corrosion guarantee on the aluminium. Anywhere near the coast, that last line is the one that matters in year ten.
When you compare quotes, compare what sits inside them. A cheaper number that leaves out the engineering or the guarantee is a different product, not the same one at a better price.
The instant estimator on our pricing page takes your dimensions and roof choice and gives an indicative figure. It is a useful way to sanity-check a budget before you commit to anything.
For the real number, arrange a free site visit. We measure, check the fixing surface and access, talk through polycarbonate versus retractable fabric, and send a fixed written quote within 48 hours. The number on that quote is fixed, so what you accept is what you pay. Lead time from acceptance is 3 to 5 weeks to installation.
At the starting rate of R3 000 per square metre, a 20 square metre pergola works out from about R60 000 supplied and installed. The final figure depends on roof choice, span and site, so we confirm it with a fixed quote after a free site visit.
As a starting point, yes. Extruded aluminium pergolas start from R3 000 per square metre against R3 200 for a louvre roof, and motorisation and sensors on a louvre roof add further to that.
Yes. Our rates are supplied and installed, and they include design, wind engineering and the lifetime corrosion guarantee on the aluminium.
Allow 3 to 5 weeks from accepting the quote to installation. The quote itself arrives within 48 hours of the free site visit.
We design, fabricate and install across the Western Cape, from the Atlantic Seaboard and Southern Suburbs to the Winelands, Helderberg, West Coast, Overberg and the Garden Route. Explore your area below.
