The brief

A motorised louvre roof over a clifftop patio in Bakoven, facing directly west over the Atlantic Ocean. The client wanted full-width cover that would seal against the South Easter in seconds, with no intermediate columns and no visual bulk overhead. The Umber Grey colour was chosen to complement the natural fynbos and coastal rock palette of the Atlantic Seaboard rather than contrast with it.

The build

Wall-attached motorised louvre roof in Umber Grey powder coat. The aluminium blade system spans the full patio width with no intermediate support columns, keeping the Atlantic horizon completely uninterrupted from every seat on the terrace. A single remote handset angles the blades to any position, from fully open to flush-closed in under 30 seconds.

When the blades are closed, an integrated gutter built into the structural beam captures rainfall and routes it to a concealed downpipe. No drip, no puddles, no noise. Marine-grade specification throughout: no ferrous metal in the structure, Umber Grey powder coat rated for front-line coastal exposure, stainless fixings to the existing wall.

The result

A terrace that was previously unusable in anything above a moderate South Easter is now a fully sealed outdoor room. The system has handled multiple seasons of Atlantic Seaboard weather without incident. Open, the Umber Grey blades frame the ocean horizon cleanly. The colour reads as shadow rather than structure, preserving the westward view. Low maintenance beyond an occasional rinse.

Motorised for Bakoven's clifftop weather

A west-facing terrace on the Atlantic Seaboard takes the full afternoon sun, and in Bakoven the South Easter can arrive with almost no warning. Manual blades would have meant winding a handle every time the weather turned. With the motor, the handset closes the roof flush in under 30 seconds, which is roughly how long you get between the first gust and the wine glasses going over.

The colour was as deliberate as the mechanism. Umber Grey sits with the granite and fynbos on this stretch of coast, so from the terrace the open blades read as shadow rather than a structure across the view. Underneath it all, nothing ferrous: stainless fixings and a coastal-rated powder coat, because front-line salt spray finds ordinary steel fast.
