The brief

A motorised louvre roof over a clifftop patio in Bakoven, facing directly west over the Atlantic Ocean. The client wanted full-width cover that would seal against the South Easter in seconds — no intermediate columns, no visual bulk overhead. The Umber Grey colour was chosen to complement the natural fynbos and coastal rock palette of the Atlantic Seaboard rather than contrast with it.

The build

Wall-attached motorised louvre roof in Umber Grey powder coat. The aluminium blade system spans the full patio width with no intermediate support columns, keeping the Atlantic horizon completely uninterrupted from every seat on the terrace. A single remote handset angles the blades to any position — from fully open to flush-closed in under 30 seconds.

When the blades are closed, an integrated gutter built into the structural beam captures rainfall and routes it to a concealed downpipe — no drip, no puddles, no noise. Marine-grade specification throughout: no ferrous metal in the structure, Umber Grey powder coat rated for front-line coastal exposure, stainless fixings to the existing wall.

The result

A terrace that was previously unusable in anything above a moderate South Easter is now a fully sealed outdoor room. The system has handled multiple seasons of Atlantic Seaboard weather without incident. Open, the Umber Grey blades frame the ocean horizon cleanly — the colour reads as shadow rather than structure, preserving the westward view. Low maintenance beyond an occasional rinse.
