The brief

Sunset Beach is a West Coast suburb directly on Table Bay, positioned to catch every variation of Cape Town's wind cycle. The north-westerly hammers it in winter; the south-easterly dominates in summer. A motorised louvre awning was the only logical choice here. The homeowner needed to be able to seal the patio remotely, quickly, when weather changes arrived without warning.

The build

The awning is a motorised louvre system in charcoal frame with white louvre blades. Remote control operation closes all blades simultaneously in under 30 seconds. The charcoal frame provides a bold structural presence suited to Sunset Beach's beachside setting, while the white blades keep the underside of the space light and open when the louvre is partially or fully open.

Table Bay's weather can change within minutes. A sunny morning can become a full westerly within an hour in Cape Town's shoulder seasons. For a homeowner who may not be present in the garden when the weather turns, a motorised system that can be triggered by remote from inside the house is not a luxury: it is the practical specification for this environment. The result

A fully automated patio cover that has performed without issue through multiple Cape storm seasons. The charcoal and white combination is particularly striking against Sunset Beach's coastal setting.
