The brief

A Gordon's Bay home wanted permanent, fully weatherproof cover with a warm, filtered light underneath rather than full shade.

The build

An extruded aluminium pergola in a white powder-coated frame, roofed with bronze multiwall polycarbonate. The polycarbonate is fully weatherproof and filters direct sun while letting soft, tinted light through, with concealed gutters in the frame.

The result

A bright but fully covered outdoor room. The bronze polycarbonate cuts glare and heat while keeping the space light, and the white frame stays clean against the Helderberg backdrop.

Polycarbonate over louvres at Gordon's Bay

Not every cover we fit is a louvre. This Gordon's Bay client wanted the opposite of adjustability: a fixed, permanently weatherproof roof with soft light underneath, and no blades to angle before a storm. Bronze multiwall polycarbonate is the answer to that brief. It cuts the glare that comes off False Bay on a summer afternoon while letting warm, tinted light through to the space below.

The trade-off is an honest one. You give up the open-to-the-sky setting a louvre gives, and in return the roof never asks for a decision again: no moving parts and nothing to close when the wind picks up. The white extruded frame carries its gutters concealed inside the profile, and the bronze sheet sits warmer against the Helderberg backdrop than clear or grey would.
