The brief

A freestanding multi-bay aluminium louvre pergola covering a poolside deck in a mature suburban garden. Post-supported on all four sides with the structure sitting independent of the main residence, forming a discrete outdoor pavilion on the wooden deck between the lawn and the swimming pool.

The build

Dark grey (charcoal) powder-coated aluminium frame with white baked-enamel aluminium louvre blades. Multi-bay layout: each bay operates as part of the larger covered area. Marine-grade extrusion, baked-enamel louvre coating, stainless fasteners. Powder-coat colour selected to read against the established garden planting rather than match the house. The structure is intended to feel like a piece of garden architecture in its own right.

The result

The pavilion remains usable through Cape Town's wet winter months and summer afternoons. The contrast of dark frame against white blades reads cleanly from across the garden whether the louvres are open or closed.

A poolside pavilion, not a lean-to

Wall-mounting is the cheaper route, and it would have been wrong here. The deck sits between the lawn and the pool, away from the main house, so the pergola stands on its own posts on all four sides and reads as a separate garden building. That call drives the rest: the covered area splits into multiple bays, each carrying its own run of louvres.

The colour logic ran backwards from most jobs too. Usually the frame gets matched to the house; here the charcoal was picked to sit against the established planting, with white baked-enamel blades lifting the underside. Stainless fasteners and marine-grade extrusion come standard on our builds, but they matter more on a freestanding structure that takes weather from all sides.
