The brief

This Knysna home on the Garden Route wanted a pergola to shade the walkway and windows, wrap the garden-facing elevation in a warm, natural timber look and soften the crisp white architecture, all without the sanding, sealing and re-oiling that real timber demands in Knysna’s humid, coastal-forest climate.

The build

We built a composite pergola with warm, honey-toned timber-look composite beams carried on powder-coated aluminium and run along the white facade. It reads as natural wood but never needs sanding, sealing or painting, and won’t warp, rot or fade in Knysna’s damp, salt-laden air.

The result

A warm, timber-look pergola that softens the white architecture and shades the windows and walkway. The look of wood with none of the upkeep, staying as good as new with nothing more than the occasional rinse.

Real timber has a short honeymoon in Knysna. The forest-coast climate is damp for months, salt rides in on the estuary air, and wooden pergolas here go grey and furry unless someone keeps sanding and re-oiling. That was exactly the cycle these owners wanted out of, which is why the beams along this facade are honey-toned composite on powder-coated aluminium instead.

In use, the pergola works as a sunscreen for the garden-facing rooms. The beams break the light before it hits the windows and shade the walkway underneath, so the house runs cooler through summer without curtains drawn all day. Maintenance amounts to washing it down occasionally. The warm tone against the white walls does the softening the brief asked for, year after year, unchanged.
