The brief

A patio off the main house in Gardens, in the shadow of Table Mountain, needed year-round cover that still let the owners open up to the sky on still Cape Town evenings. Lighting for evening use was part of the brief from the start.

The build

A full-charcoal aluminium louvre roof, charcoal powder-coated frame with matching charcoal blades, wall-attached over the patio and pitched to drain away from the house. The blades are manually adjustable, and we ran integrated LED downlights into the underside of the structure so the space works after dark without a separate light fitting.

The result

Closed, the louvres throw rain clear of the patio; open, they let warm afternoon light and air through. The recessed downlights turn the cover into an evening room, and the all-charcoal finish reads as a deliberate architectural line against the pale house wall.

A Gardens patio that works after dark

Gardens sits close under Table Mountain, so afternoon light goes earlier than in the flatter suburbs and the evenings are the payoff. The owners wanted lighting in the plan from day one, and the LED downlights recessed into the underside mean the patio doesn't shut down when the sun drops behind the mountain.

On still City Bowl nights the blades crank fully open and the space sits under open sky. When the winter fronts come through, the same blades close and pitch the rain away from the house wall. The all-charcoal frame against the pale wall was a deliberate call, a dark line you read as architecture rather than an awning bolted on.
