The brief

This Langebaan home wanted a louvre roof that worked after dark and held up to the West Coast wind. A full outdoor room, rather than a daytime-only shade structure.

The build

A charcoal-framed aluminium louvre roof with white blades, fitted with integrated LED downlights wired concealed through the frame, and outdoor drop blinds on the open sides for wind and low-sun protection.

The result

Blades adjust for sun and rain by day, downlights take over at night, and the drop blinds close the space down when the Langebaan wind picks up. A genuinely year-round, all-hours outdoor room.

Langebaan evenings under the downlights

Langebaan days end well, and that's when this roof does its best work. The concealed LED downlights come on as the light goes, so supper can carry on outside without dragging a lamp out. White blades overhead keep the space feeling open even once they're closed for the night.

The drop blinds matter just as much out here. West Coast wind arrives fast and sideways, and being able to close the open sides down means an evening doesn't get abandoned at the first gust. By day it's a normal louvre roof, blades tilted for sun or sealed for rain; by night, with blinds down and downlights on, it's another room on the house.
