The brief

A Flamingo Vlei home in Table View needed permanent, fully weatherproof cover that could take the constant wind off the bay. That meant a fixed roof rather than an adjustable one.

The build

An extruded aluminium pergola finished in full charcoal, roofed with fixed IBR sheeting and a concealed box gutter. The fixed IBR roof gives maximum span and straightforward, fully weatherproof cover, all in marine-grade aluminium for the exposure.

The result

A solid, sealed outdoor room that shrugs off the Table View wind and rain year-round. The charcoal finish keeps it sharp against the house and needs very little upkeep.

There is nothing to open or close here, and that was the point. When the wind picks up off the bay, an adjustable roof is one more thing to manage; this fixed IBR roof means the patio at the Flamingo Vlei house is simply always covered. Winter rain runs into the concealed box gutter and away from the space below.

People with IBR overhead mention the sound first. Rain drums on it, and most come to like that; the covered patio turns into the place to sit while a front moves through. Summer is easier still. The charcoal finish takes the coastal sun, and marine-grade aluminium means the salt in the Table View air never gets a foothold. Wipe-down maintenance, nothing more.
