The brief

A Tokai home wanted a clean, low-maintenance cover over the patio. It needed to be adjustable enough to open for sun and close when the weather turns, and finished to sit with the house rather than stand out.

The build

An aluminium louvre roof finished with a bronze frame and white blades, wall-attached and carried on slim aluminium posts over the patio. Manual rotating blades open for light and air, or angle and close to shed rain. Everything is built in marine-grade aluminium, so it never rusts or needs repainting.

The result

A bright, sheltered space that looks built-in. Open, the blades let the sun through; closed, they keep the patio dry. With no steel and no timber there's nothing to maintain, just a cover that works right through the Cape's seasons.

Aluminium under the Tokai treeline

Tokai is pine and oak country, and anything you put over a patio here ends up wearing the trees: needles, leaf drop, pollen in spring. That was part of the argument for aluminium on this job. The blades close to shed rain and debris off the roof, and a rinse now and then is the whole maintenance schedule. Nothing to sand down or repaint.

The bronze frame is the quieter half of the story. It reads warmer than charcoal against brick and garden, and with white blades overhead the patio stays bright even in winter when the light drops early under the Constantiaberg. Open for sun, angle for air, close when the Southern Suburbs rain sets in.
